History of "Minoa"

During the Minoan Period, 2100-145 BC, many small coastal cities had the name “Minoa” and they originated during the period of the expansion of the Minoan Domination. One of those cities was located at the Akrotiri Peninsula, close to the city of Chania (the ancient city of Kydonia) in the area now called Maràthi. The Minòa city was a small colony of Knossians and is thought to be established around 1590 BC. Minoa had very good connections with the ancient city Aptèra, a city located in the area now called Megàla Horàfia. These two cities used together had the control of the port of Souda Bay and small islet, on which a fortress was erected at a later time.

Later, in 217 BC, it became a Macedonian protectorate by King Filip E of Macedonia and in 171-168 BC it entered into an alliance with 30 other Cretan cities Cretan cities under the name “Common of Cretans” with King Evmenis B' of Pergamos. The city was destroyed by the Romans, after 146 BC, when the island was under Roman Domination. Later, at the beginning of the 20th century, one of the first hotels, which were established in Chania, was called “Minoa”, after the name of the ancient city. The hotel was located in the same position as the present Hotel Minoa.

The newly-built MINOA Hotel is a continuation of the Art Deco style implemented in the original distinguished hotel and has been restored to comprise 15 classically furnished rooms and 5 suites offering all comforts of a modern luxury hotel and an incredible view of the Municipal Garden and the Town Clock. The design of the hotel logo stems from the ancient Palace of Knossos.

The fine Minoa Hotel with its friendly and relaxed atmosphere promises unforgetable experience in Chania.
